Three platforms pushed their ad products meaningfully forward in the same week — Google closing out a major structural migration, Meta consolidating its creator infrastructure, and OpenAI turning ChatGPT ads from static cards into actual conversations. The direction across all three is consistent: less manual control, more AI orchestration, and a quietly expanding definition of what an "ad" can do.
Google: AI Max Upgrades Are Happening in Your Account Right Now
If you run Search campaigns with Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets, or campaign-level broad match, Google's AI Max migration is already underway — and finishing this month. Campaigns using ACA and broad match settings have been auto-upgrading through September, with Google expecting all eligible migrations to wrap by month's end. New DSA campaigns cannot be created through Google Ads, Ads Editor, or the Ads API at this point.
The DSA-to-AI Max full sunset was pushed from September to February 2027 after advertiser pushback in June. Google Ads Liaison Ginny Marvin cited the need to protect Q4 results and give teams more runway. That extension covers DSA only. ACA and broad match campaigns are on the original September timeline and will be upgraded whether you've touched them or not.
When the auto-upgrade lands, AI Max combines search term matching, text customization, and final URL expansion into a unified structure, replacing the dynamic ad group model. Google puts the average lift at 7% more conversions or conversion value at similar efficiency for accounts using the full feature suite — though independent audits have flagged that the 7% compares full-feature AI Max against matching-only AI Max, not against DSA directly. One agency benchmark showed 99% of AI Max search terms drove zero conversions in a single case study. There is real variance in outcomes here.
The practical priority: identify which campaigns are in scope, confirm that URL rules and tracking templates won't break under dynamic landing page expansion, and locate any pinned copy that may get overridden. BFSI accounts — insurance, lending, mutual funds — need particular attention on final URL expansion. Product-level landing pages and compliance-cleared copy should not be swapping out automatically. Review before Google does it for you.
Meta: Creator Hub Goes Global, Live Video Ads Land, and Meta One Drops
Meta had the fullest week of any of the three platforms. At IAB Global Creator Week (September 14–18), it globally rolled out the Creator Marketing Hub — a single surface merging what used to be two separate tools: Creator Marketplace and Partnership Ads Hub. From the consolidated hub, advertisers can discover creators, surface their organic content, and turn approved posts directly into Partnership Ads without switching between platforms.
New capabilities include content-level permissions with expiration dates, discovery filters that surface creators already featuring your product category, ad-readiness editing that strips copyrighted music and stickers before a post can run as an ad, and one-click ad creation tied to specific campaign objectives like sales or awareness. The API layer opened simultaneously — the Creator Marketplace API now covers Facebook creators alongside Instagram creators through a single integration, and a new Messaging API lets brands and tools discover, contact, and activate creators programmatically. For agencies managing creator programmes at scale, creator sourcing can now be scripted rather than done manually through the UI. That's a meaningful operational change.
Instagram Live video ads, already live on Facebook, arrive September 29. Brands will be able to amplify a creator's Instagram livestream as a Partnership Ad, extending reach beyond that creator's existing followers while the stream runs. The format plays well for product launches, demos, and anything where real-time context drives purchase intent — a live try-on, a cooking segment, a fund manager Q&A.
On September 15, Meta launched Meta One — paid subscription tiers running $2.99 to $499 a month across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Meta AI. Business and creator bundles starting at $14.99/month include Meta Business Agent access for customer messaging, a verified WhatsApp Business badge, competitive insights tracking up to ten brands on Instagram, audience history exports, and advanced cross-app scheduling. The $499 Max plan adds phone support from a Meta employee. Meta has reported more than 15 million sign-ups including trials since the phased rollout began earlier this year.
For advertisers, Meta One signals something beyond a feature list: Meta is building a second revenue stream that doesn't require selling more ad impressions. The more interesting question is which analytics and audience tools get quietly gated to paid tiers over time — Competitive Insights and custom audience data are already behind the business subscription. Worth keeping an eye on as the tiers mature.
OpenAI: ChatGPT Ads Can Now Talk Back
On September 16, OpenAI announced Sponsored Agents, currently in testing with select US advertisers. When a user clicks an ad inside ChatGPT, they can open a clearly labelled, separate conversation with an AI agent backed by that advertiser. The sponsored conversation is explicitly walled off from ChatGPT's independent answers and from the user's original chat session. A shopper who sees a dining table in a ChatGPT ad can ask the Sponsored Agent whether it fits a particular room size, how many people it seats, and how to care for the finish — then click through to the brand's site when ready. The ad becomes a conversation rather than a destination.
The same announcement brought two significant infrastructure moves. HubSpot became OpenAI's first CRM partner: businesses managing customer relationships in HubSpot can now connect a ChatGPT Ads account and, without leaving HubSpot, create campaigns, monitor performance, and trigger follow-up workflows using existing contact data. Shopify became OpenAI's first ecommerce partner — US merchants can install a free ChatGPT Ads app in the Shopify App Store, with products automatically integrated through Shopify Catalog. International rollout for the Shopify app begins September 23 in markets where ChatGPT Ads already operates.
Ads Manager itself was updated in the same release: campaigns can now be created through natural-language prompts in ChatGPT Work, with AI-suggested copy, imagery generation, and an opt-in setting that adapts headlines to conversational context and translates them into the user's language.
Sponsored Agents raises a measurement question Google's search ads never had to answer: what does attribution look like when an ad triggers a multi-turn conversation rather than a landing page click? OpenAI's ad business hit a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate roughly 200 days after launch and now operates in more than 40 countries — but the conversation-to-conversion measurement infrastructure is still being defined. For brands considering an early test, the HubSpot integration is currently the sharpest path to attribution, since it ties ChatGPT Ads spend to existing contact records and deal pipelines directly.
The Week in Sum
Google is finishing a structural shift that started in April. Meta rebuilt its creator ad workflow from the ground up, added a subscriptions layer, and extended live commerce to Instagram. OpenAI turned ads into conversations and plugged into the two systems — CRM and ecommerce — where most businesses already manage customers and products. Across all three, the surface area of what "running an ad" means has expanded, and passive, set-and-forget campaign management has less margin than it did a month ago.
The Transformics paid media team is currently mid-way through AI Max audits for several accounts and has been scoping early ChatGPT Ads placements specifically for clients in financial services and ecommerce — two categories where the Sponsored Agents format and the HubSpot attribution path are the most immediately relevant. If any of these changes touch your accounts and you want a second set of eyes, get in touch.
